August 9, 2008

Our Regular Membership Meeting will be held at Loda Lake Wildflower Sanctuary in Lincoln Township at 11:00am.  We plan to take a walking tour of the area with Pam Miller as our guide and at noon we will sit and have a box lunch picnic (provide your own lunch and refreshments, this is not a potluck).  Take M37 north of White Cloud and turn left at 5 Mile Road and then north on Felch Road.

Description: Loda Lake Wildflower Sanctuary contains a self-guided walking tour trail through a variety of habitats. The trail winds through oak-maple woodlands, alongside a stream and floodplain, through old pine plantations, and on a boardwalk through a shrub swamp and emergent wetland. A very nice variety of wildflowers can be seen along the way including: pink lady’s slipper (Cypripedium acaule), round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia), jack-in-the-pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum), trailing arbutus (Epigaea repens), swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata), and columbine (Aquilegia canadensis).

Viewing Information: The shorter loop trail is approximately ½ mile; the full loop is approximately 1.5 miles long. The trail offers a moderately easy hike over relatively flat ground. The trail offers 39 numbered viewing stations described in a guide obtained at the trailhead. The guide contains a map of the trails and a description of the different species that may be observed at each station.

Saturday, October 11, 2008

The regular Society meeting, 11:00am at the Commission on Aging Building, will consist of:  Stolen Mills Productions with Raymond Goodwin's play "Paul Baseball Bunyan".   All Society members are encouraged to attend.  The premise is as follows:

JT Lesten has promised his cousin, Annette, that he will take her place making a speech about "The History of the Lesten Lumber Company".  JT and Annette are the grandchildren of the timber baron who founded the company and built the town that bears the family name.  In his speech (which is the play), JT surveys much of the family and company history, using logging and baseball stories to reveal the family's struggles and secrets.

Written and performed by Raymond Goodwin, approximate time:  35 minutes

Fall, 2008  thru Spring, 2009 Country School Committee

The Society will be holding Country School gatherings starting Fall, 2008 in order to supply our committee with background information about our country schools.  Watch for information in our Newsletters on which school students we'll ask to gather and where and when we'll hold the gatherings.  We'll be hoping you can supply photos, lists of your classmates and teachers and generally what would take place on a normal school day.  This can be a lot of fun!
